What the latest data show
The European Central Bank's daily reference rate for the euro was 1.1150 US dollars on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, down from 1.1188 the previous business day. The euro has not been fixed this low since 13 May 2025, when the rate was 1.1112.
The single currency is 4.2% weaker than a year ago, when the reference rate stood at 1.1640 on 27 October 2025, and 5.1% below the 1.1750 at which it ended 2025. Its 2026 high was 1.1974 on 28 January, so the euro has given up 6.9% since then. It began October at 1.1298, after 1.1355 on 30 September, and has slipped 1.8% this month alone.
A reversal of last year's rally
The decline follows a strong 2025 for the euro. It started that year near its lows, at 1.0198 on 13 January 2025, and climbed 13.1% over the year, from 1.0389 at the end of 2024 to 1.1750 at the end of 2025. It reached 1.1837 on 17 September 2025, then pushed higher again in early 2026.
Since February, the trend has been lower. Monthly averages fell from 1.1824 in February to 1.1513 in September, and the October average so far is 1.1211, the weakest for any month since March 2025. The euro has fixed below 1.12 on eight trading days in October 2026 and on none earlier in the year. The 2026 average to date is 1.1574, still above the 1.1225 average since 2015.
Steady rather than volatile
The slide has been gradual. Annualised volatility of daily changes in the euro-dollar reference rate is 5.6% so far in 2026, the calmest year since 2021 (5.2%) and well below the 10.2% of 2022, when the euro fell below parity with the dollar on 47 days. The biggest single-day moves this year were a 1.3% rise on 8 April and a 1.1% fall on 18 June.
For context, the euro's highest reference rate since 2015 was 1.2493 in February 2018 and its lowest was 0.9565 in September 2022. Today's 1.1150 sits close to the middle of that range.
The euro against the yuan, sterling and the yen
The euro's fall has been sharpest against the Chinese yuan. The ECB reference rate was 7.4343 yuan per euro on 27 October, down 10.1% from 8.2731 a year earlier and the lowest since March 2023. It began 2026 at 8.1973 and peaked at 8.3176 on 28 January.
Against sterling the euro fetched 0.83658 pounds, 4.1% less than a year ago and the lowest since April 2025. Against the Japanese yen it was 175.97, 1.1% lower on the year and 6.3% below its 2026 high of 187.72 on 17 April.
